Huntington Meeting Centre

Four meeting rooms ideal for teaching, workshops, business meetings, fitness classes and community events

Our picture shows local roofing contractor Roofs Above fitting a lead cap to the roof tower of the Centre.  No-one knew the tower was supposed to have a cap until surveyors LHL Group put a remotely controlled digital camera on a telescopic pole over the tower. The light shading on the leadwork and suspicious nail-holes indicated that a cap was missing. How long the cap has been missing is unknown.

The purpose of the tower, apart from its obvious aesthetic one, is thought to be to provide ventilation for what was the main school room below. But if you have any other ideas about this, please let us know as we shall be interested to hear them.

Maureen Duncanson retires as Manager after 31 years

A retirement party was held at the Centre on 30th April 2019 to mark the retirement of Maureen who started working here shortly after it became a community centre in 1986.  Before then the building had been Huntington's primary school but as children numbers grew, the building was unable to accommodate them all.  Initially, the nearby Memorial Hall was used for the overspill but quickly it was realised a new larger school was required and this was built close to New Lane.

Over the years, Maureen has facilitated thousands of meetings and events at the centre and, more recently, turned the centre's kitchen into a thriving cafe which is open to all every weekday morning from 10 am to 12 noon. She is replaced by her assistant of several years standing, Tracy Martin.

Some of our past events included a Centre Open Day at which local organisations put on displays to raise awareness of what they do and to attract new members and support.

To celebrate The Queen's 60th Jubilee, the Centre had a party for the community with music and refreshments and a very popular Tombola.

Past events

Centre celebrates 30 years and first new roof since 1877.

Huntington Community Centre is 30 years old this year and to celebrate the achievement, we held a birthday party for our users, past and present trustees, staff, Huntington Parish and local City Councillors.

A civic party comprising York's Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, and York's Sheriff and his Lady also attended.   Lord Mayor, Cllr David Taylor, cut our birthday cake and paid tribute to the Centre for its great contribution to the community.

The celebration also marked the completion of a major roof refurbishment - believed the be the first undertaken since the building was opened as a board school in 1877.  However it was the parish school prior to that date, so the roof may be as old as 170 years.

The work was funded by Huntington Parish Council and was finished on time and within budget.  Main contractor was Sorrell Construction and the  construction consultant was LHL Group.
